Everything You Need To Know About Experiential Learning

Everything You Need To Know About Experiential Learning

Everything that we learn by doing, comes under Experiential Learning. Not everything in life is taught. Some things are learned as well. We learn to walk when we walk, not when we’re told to walk. Similarly, no matter how many books we read or how many videos we watch, unless we sit on the driving seat, we will never learn to drive.

That implies simultaneous implementation of learning using different tools to reach an outcome or get results is experiential learning.

Characteristics of Experiential Learning

  1. Experiencing: means doing something by making use of an activity or a game

  2. Publishing: sharing observations and creating participation

  3. Processing: means interpreting how things work using data analytics tools

  4. Generalizing: means connecting it to real-life experiences
  5. Applying: means planning effective results and favorable outcomes

Four mush have elements for experiential learning as learners are-

  1. To be active to make the learning engaging in nature, and not a passive one.

  2. To reflect upon the experience because that’s where the learning happens.

  3. To attain desired analytical skills to clear our concepts.

  4. To possess decision-making and problem-solving skills to make good use of gained ideas.

In the real world, there is always more than one solution to a lot of problems. The purpose of experiential learning is to validate those solutions. Through this, an individual gets to learn that there is no “right or wrong way of thinking”, no “set rules”, or “perfect behaviors” that everyone has to learn and apply. In fact, this kind of learning gives the liberty to explore one’s personality.

Role of Experiential Learning in Business

There are various aspects of life where actual learning is required. For example- community service, business, undergraduate research, abroad study, internships, projects, etc. And business is of utmost importance.

The process of learning and developing necessary skills required in business through the channel of shared experiences is called experiential learning in business. And the main difference between this kind of learning and classroom learning is that in business, people have observed more real-life experiences.

Interactive and role-play-based learning is an example that develops the necessary attributes for customer service training.
For long-term impact, it’s very important to keep it simple and relevant for everyone in the team to learn and understand and at the same time sustain the learning for future use.
