Want to avoid overcommitment?

It’s clear that the key is learning to strike the right balance. Here are some steps you can take to better manage your time and energy:
1. Identify Why You Overcommit
You need to assess what’s behind your tendency to overcommit:
Are you taking on others’ tasks because they’re not doing them?
Are you stepping in because you think you can handle it better or faster?
Are you simply not comfortable saying no?
Understanding the root cause will help you decide when it’s appropriate to step in and when it’s okay to say no.
2. Learn How to Say No
It’s essential to practice setting boundaries. Here are a few ways you can say no without feeling guilty:
“I’ve made other plans; I’m sorry I can’t help you this time.”
“I’m focused on another task and can’t take this on right now.”
“I think [someone else] might be better suited to help with this.”
By saying no when necessary, you create space for tasks that align more closely with your goals and responsibilities.
3. Set Criteria for Saying Yes
When you do say yes, ensure it’s for the right reasons:
Helping someone in need, especially if they’d do the same for you.
Taking on tasks that offer learning opportunities or are enjoyable.
Stepping in when your manager or team needs extra support.
Volunteering for activities that help you grow professionally.
By setting clear criteria for when you commit, you’ll be able to prioritize tasks that make a meaningful impact.
4. Understand the Costs of Overcommitting
Consider what working long hours is costing you. Is it affecting your health, relationships, or personal time? If so, it may be time to reassess whether the extra hours are worth it. You need to define your own standards for work-life balance and stick to them.
5. Set Your Own Boundaries
Don't let others' opinions dictate how much time you should be working. If you enjoy long hours and they don’t negatively impact your well-being, then that’s a valid choice for you. However, if others are making you feel like you’re overdoing it, make sure you’re clear on your own needs and goals.
