Have you ever walked into a space and instantly felt like you didn’t belong? You’re not alone. Many of us have experienced moments of unease in unfamiliar or unwelcoming environments. Maybe it’s a language barrier, feeling underdressed, or doubting your ideas in the presence of confident voices. It could be noticing that your family structure looks different from others. Whatever the reason, the feeling of exclusion can be deeply unsettling, whether intentional or not. This is why fostering inclusive communities is so important. Inclusive spaces embrace respect and belonging for everyone. When people feel valued and included, they’re more engaged and productive because they can invest themselves emotionally and mentally. Such environments also create psychological safety—a foundation for trust, innovation, and collaboration. Why does inclusion matter to me? I am a queer woman. Since coming out in 2016, I’ve had experiences that shaped my understanding of the power of inclusion. It has been a critical part of my life, providing the sense of belonging essential to my emotional and mental well-being. Inclusive spaces give me confidence and self-esteem, and throughout my professional career, I’ve sought to share this sense of belonging with others. Earlier this year, I co-founded Carver County Pride, the first and only LGBTQ+ nonprofit in Carver County, Minnesota. What started as a simple idea—hosting Friday night gatherings—evolved into a vibrant model of inclusion. I watched LGBTQ+ individuals light up as they felt seen and valued in conversations. Bonds were formed, connections deepened, and my co-founders and I knew we had to grow this into something bigger. Today, Carver County Pride is a visible, thriving community of LGBTQ+ individuals and allies. Inclusion in professional spaces As the Senior Manager of Community Experience at Blanchard, I focus on creating an inclusive environment for global leaders in the Blanchard Community. Here, we connect, learn, and grow together. By encouraging open communication and building trust among our members, we foster a psychologically safe space where everyone can share their thoughts without fear of judgment. This culture not only drives innovation and collaboration but also enriches lives. My role is all about making connections—between people, resources, and opportunities. Each connection brings new insights and helps amplify voices within the community. It’s deeply rewarding work that aligns with my passion for ensuring every individual feels valued and heard. Creating inclusive communities: It’s a win-win When we create inclusive communities—whether through nonprofits like Carver County Pride or professional networks like the Blanchard Community—we enrich relationships, strengthen leadership, and build empathy. It’s a collective win that benefits everyone. Here are a few simple ways to foster inclusivity in your work, home, and community: Celebrate diversity: Honor cultural, religious, and personal milestones across your family, workplace, and community. Recognizing diverse interests and backgrounds enriches everyone’s experiences and strengthens connections. Step out of your comfort zone: Engage with people who are different from you. Attend events that bring together diverse groups, volunteer with organizations that support marginalized communities, or get involved with initiatives like Free Mom Hugs, which works to empower the LGBTQIA+ community by simply showing up. Practice active listening: Listen to understand, not just to reply. In meetings or casual conversations, focus fully on what others are sharing. Lead by example: Demonstrate inclusivity by being transparent, owning your mistakes, and treating everyone with respect. Showing genuine interest in others’ lives builds trust, which is the foundation of any strong community. Educate and advocate: Use your voice to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Push for policies and practices that create more inclusive workplaces and communities. Start today—take one small step Inclusion begins with action. My challenge to you is simple: take one step today to make your corner of the world more inclusive. Whether it’s joining the Blanchard Community for inspiration or starting something entirely your own, remember—it’s not about the size of your action, but the commitment to making a difference. Together, we can create spaces where everyone belongs.
